Hazardous Waste
As a business if you produce, move, receive or dispose of hazardous waste, there are certain procedures you must follow under the Hazardous Waste Regulations.
Mandata Contracts can guide you through the process of registering as a hazardous waste producer and assist or advise in the moving or receiving hazardous waste and how to keep appropriate records.
What is Hazardous Waste?
Hazardous Wastes are harmful to human health or to the environment, either immediately or over an extended period of time. If your business produces hazardous waste then you have a 'duty of care' to make sure it is disposed of properly.
If the items exhibit Hazardous Properties e.g. explosive, flammable, oxidizing, irritant, toxic, harmful, carcinogenic, infectious, mutagenic, teratogenic then clearly they are Hazardous Waste and must be treated appropriately. For a detailed list of instructions and procedures for the production, treatment and movement of Hazardous Waste please consult the Environment Agency.

However, what is less obvious is waste that is considered to be hazardous under the waste regulations but don’t at first glance appear to exhibit hazardous properties as above but their contents contain toxic or potentially toxic materials in sufficient quantities.
Therefore the definition of what constitutes Hazardous waste includes items such as lead acid batteries, fluorescent light tubes, fridges, microwave ovens and electrical heaters. Computer monitors (especially the larger CRT variety) are therefore deemed as Hazardous Waste because they may contain Mercury.
If you have any questions regarding the production, movement and/or disposal of Hazardous Waste please contact Mandata Contracts Ltd.
